How automatic renewal works, how to cancel, and what the money-back guarantee covers at Domein Direct. Clarity up front, so you know exactly where you stand.
It is important to know the difference between how domain names and hosting plans work when it comes to renewal and cancellation.
Domain name registrations and renewals are final. Once processed, they cannot be reversed or changed.
All hosting plans have a 12-month contract term and are billed annually or monthly.
Cancellations are always handled through My account. Cancelling by phone or email is not possible.
If you do not cancel in time, you pay for a new term. Make sure you switch off the domain name or hosting plan before the new invoice is generated — usually 1 month before the expiry date. You receive an email reminder 30 days in advance.
Go to domein-direct.nl/account and log in with your email address and password.
Select the product you want to cancel. For domain names: click "Domains" and switch off automatic renewal. For hosting: click "Hosting & Services".
Choose "Cancel immediately" or "Cancel at the end of the term". You receive a confirmation by email and the status is visible in your account right away.
Bought a hosting plan and not satisfied? You can cancel within 30 days of the first purchase and request a refund. The refund is issued within 90 days via the same payment method, minus the setup costs (equal to 1 month). After the 30-day trial period, refunds are no longer possible, including for early cancellation.
If you do not renew a domain name or your payment is late, the domain name is placed in quarantine after the expiry date. You are still temporarily the owner, but the services (website, email) have stopped.
Within the quarantine period of 35 days you can still reclaim the domain name. Additional costs apply. Once the quarantine ends, the domain name is released and anyone can register it again.
Do you use the domain name for email? Then keep it for at least another year after you stop, so you do not miss messages sent to that address.
You receive a reminder by email. This is the moment to decide whether you want to renew or cancel.
If not renewed: website and email are stopped. The domain name goes into quarantine.
The domain name is released. Anyone can register it again after that — including competitors.
