Different rules apply to domain names and hosting

It is important to know the difference between how domain names and hosting plans work when it comes to renewal and cancellation.

🌐

Domain names

Domain name registrations and renewals are final. Once processed, they cannot be reversed or changed.

  • Minimum term of 1 year, can be secured for up to 10 years
  • Renewed automatically unless you switch this off in your account
  • Cancel up to 1 month before the expiry date
  • You receive an email reminder 30 days in advance
  • No refunds on domain names
  • After the expiry date: 35 days of quarantine
  • Promotional price followed by a transfer: the difference with the regular rate will be charged
🖥

Hosting plans

All hosting plans have a 12-month contract term and are billed annually or monthly.

  • 30-day money-back guarantee after the first purchase
  • Renewed automatically unless cancelled
  • Cancel via My account — immediately or at the end of the term
  • Invoice issued 27 days before the expiry date
  • No refunds for early cancellation after 30 days
  • Free domain in your plan: the regular domain price is deducted from any refund

How to cancel — everything via your account

Cancellations are always handled through My account. Cancelling by phone or email is not possible.

⚠️

If you do not cancel in time, you pay for a new term. Make sure you switch off the domain name or hosting plan before the new invoice is generated — usually 1 month before the expiry date. You receive an email reminder 30 days in advance.

1

Log in to My account

Go to domein-direct.nl/account and log in with your email address and password.

2

Go to Domains or Hosting

Select the product you want to cancel. For domain names: click "Domains" and switch off automatic renewal. For hosting: click "Hosting & Services".

3

Choose cancel or switch off

Choose "Cancel immediately" or "Cancel at the end of the term". You receive a confirmation by email and the status is visible in your account right away.

30-day money-back guarantee on hosting

Bought a hosting plan and not satisfied? You can cancel within 30 days of the first purchase and request a refund. The refund is issued within 90 days via the same payment method, minus the setup costs (equal to 1 month). After the 30-day trial period, refunds are no longer possible, including for early cancellation.

What happens when your domain name expires?

If you do not renew a domain name or your payment is late, the domain name is placed in quarantine after the expiry date. You are still temporarily the owner, but the services (website, email) have stopped.

Within the quarantine period of 35 days you can still reclaim the domain name. Additional costs apply. Once the quarantine ends, the domain name is released and anyone can register it again.

Do you use the domain name for email? Then keep it for at least another year after you stop, so you do not miss messages sent to that address.

📅 30 days before the expiry date

You receive a reminder by email. This is the moment to decide whether you want to renew or cancel.

⏰ On the expiry date

If not renewed: website and email are stopped. The domain name goes into quarantine.

🔴 After 35 days of quarantine

The domain name is released. Anyone can register it again after that — including competitors.

Questions about renewal and cancellation

The most common questions about cancelling, renewing and refunds.

How do I switch off automatic renewal for my domain name?
Log in to your account and go to "Domains". Click the domain name and choose "Auto renew". Switch it off. Do this at least 1 month before the expiry date — after that the invoice is generated and you can no longer cancel free of charge.
Can I cancel my hosting plan before the end of the term?
Yes. Log in to your account and go to "Hosting & Services". You can choose to cancel immediately or at the end of the term. If you cancel immediately, you lose access to the service, and no refund is given after the 30-day trial period.
How do I request a refund within the 30-day guarantee?
Cancel the plan via your account within 30 days of the first purchase. Then open a help ticket requesting a refund. The refund is issued within 90 days via the same payment method, minus the setup costs of 1 month.
Do I get a refund on a domain name?
No. Domain name registrations and renewals are final once processed. Refunds on domain names are not possible. If you have a hosting plan with a free domain name and you request a refund, the regular rate of the domain name is deducted from the amount to be refunded.
What happens if I do not pay my invoice?
If the invoice is not paid on time, the services are stopped 1 week before the end of the term. The domain name then goes into quarantine. Make sure the invoice is always paid no later than 1 week before the start date of the new term.
Can I transfer my domain name away if I want to cancel?
Transferring to another registrar is free of charge outside the cancellation notice period (more than 1 month before the expiry date). Within the notice period we charge an administration fee. Requesting a transfer code counts as an immediate cancellation. Privately registered domain names must first be put in your name via a registrant change before they can be transferred.
I paid a promotional price and want to transfer away mid-term — what does that cost?
If you registered or renewed a domain name at a promotional price and you want to transfer the domain name to another registrar within the current term, we charge the difference between the promotional price you paid and the regular rate. This is because the promotional price applies to a full term at Domein Direct. Questions about the costs? Contact us via a help ticket.
How do I know when my domain name or hosting expires?
You receive an email 30 days in advance with details about the upcoming renewal. You can also always find the current expiry date in your account under "Domains" or "Hosting & Services". The renewal invoice is generated 27 days before the expiry date.
